Pune’s young artist, Gitanjali Thakur, is holding her second solo exhibition of paintings, titled “Masked Men”, which was inaugurated on 21st April at 5pm at Sanskriti Lifestyle, at Koregaon Park, in association with Malaka Art. The exhibition will be on from 22nd April to 30th from 11am to 8pm.

Gitanjali Thakur’s latest body of work “Masked Men” has Kathakali as the theme. “It is an experiment in unveiling the larger than life characters of Kathakali”, explains Gitanjali. “Kathakali meaning ‘story play’, dating from the 17th century, relies on 24 hand gestures and nine stylized facial expressions to portray various emotions. The performers take on roles as gods, demons, ogres, temptresses, and kings in tales from Indian mythological epics, where truth and goodness always triumph over evil”.

On display are a collection of 14 beautiful paintings of the artist. “The richness of a happy blending of colour, expressions, music, drama and dance is what attracted me to work on this subject”, says the artist. Her colours are bright and the images are bold. “I don’t have a particular style of painting and it’s the subject that decides the style and medium.”
Her first solo show, titled ‘Towards Surrender’, which was a video art show and exhibition of paintings held in September 2006, received an overwhelming response.

A product of J.J. School of Art, young Gitanjali has also done a photography course at Fergusson College and studied cinematography at FTII.

Gitanjali Thakur is slowly and steadily standing up to be counted in the great churning pot of creativity, in the vibrantly evolving visual art scene of Pune.
